This two-storey residence sits in a prominent beachfront location and as such provided a challenging and somewhat contradictory brief.
We needed to provide a residence that opens to the south, but still allowed direct natural sunlight from the north; a residence that was open to maximise views and still provided privacy for the residents; a residence that gave great indoor-outdoor connection and cross-ventilation and was also protected from the fierce weather that such an exposed site will experience.
The result was a residence that not only opened to the southerly views to the south, but also wrapped around a central courtyard which allows direct sunlight and ventilation to the heart of the residence, while providing protection from strong coastal winds. Materiality choices such as blockwork, concrete and fibre cement give good durability to the elements, while timber screening provides sun protection and privacy.
